US gymnast Jordan Chiles loses bronze medal in floor routine

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Sunday that the bronze medal awarded to American gymnast Jordan Chiles in the floor exercise at the Paris Games will be reallocated to Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu.

This decision follows a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Saturday, which determined that the United States’ inquiry into Chiles’ score during Monday’s gymnastics floor exercise final was submitted after the one-minute deadline had passed.

As a result, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) reinstated Chiles’ original score of 13.666, while Bărbosu’s score of 13.700 was elevated to third place. The IOC confirmed that this adjustment means Chiles will lose her bronze medal, which will now be awarded to Bărbosu.

The IOC released a statement saying, “Following the CAS decision regarding the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Floor Exercise Final and the amendment of the ranking by the International Gymnastics Federation, the IOC will reallocate the bronze medal to Ana Bărbosu (Romania). We are in touch with the NOC of Romania to discuss the reallocation ceremony and with the USOPC regarding the return of the bronze medal.”

MBNEWS24 has contacted the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) and USA Gymnastics to inquire if they plan to appeal the CAS decision. USA Gymnastics, in a statement on Saturday, expressed that it was “devastated” by the ruling.

The competition on Monday ended in dramatic fashion. After Chiles’ routine concluded, Bărbosu believed she had secured the bronze medal with a score of 13.700. Initially, Chiles had posted a score of 13.666, but her coaches successfully challenged the difficulty score, which added 0.1 points and moved her up to third place, behind gold medalist Rebeca Andrade and American Simone Biles.

The sight of Andrade, Biles, and Chiles together on the first all-Black Olympic gymnastics podium became one of the most iconic images of the Games, as the Americans bowed down to Andrade in respect.

However, CAS ruled that the inquiry on behalf of Chiles was submitted after the one-minute deadline stipulated in the regulations, putting her medal at risk.

Following the CAS ruling, Chiles posted on her Instagram story, sharing four broken heart emojis and stating, “I am taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health thank you.”
