Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively Are First Married Couple to Top Box Office since 1990

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have achieved a remarkable milestone as a Hollywood power couple, with their films simultaneously dominating the domestic box office. This is a feat that hasn’t been accomplished by a married couple in 34 years.

‘Die Hard 2’ starring Willis and ‘Ghost’ starring Moore dominated the box office 34 years ago

Lively’s film It Ends With Us, which premiered on Friday, August 9, has already grossed $50 million, placing it at No. 2 at the box office. Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine continues to hold the top spot, bringing in over $54 million this weekend alone and reaching a total of $494.3 million domestically since its release on July 26.

The last time a married couple saw their films rank No. 1 and No. 2 at the box office was in 1990 with Demi Moore and Bruce Willis. That year, Willis’ Die Hard 2 and Moore’s Ghost were the top two films at the box office, respectively. Ghost went on to receive five Oscar nominations and won two, ultimately becoming the second-highest-grossing film of 1990 with $217.6 million, while Die Hard 2 took the No. 8 spot with $117.5 million.

Moore and Willis, who met at a screening of Stakeout in 1987, married that same year and had three daughters before divorcing in 2000. Despite their separation, they have remained close friends and have appeared in three movies together: Mortal Thoughts (1991), Beavis and Butt-Head Do America (1996), and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003).

Similarly, Lively and Reynolds have collaborated on several projects, including Green Lantern (2011) and the upcoming IF (2024). Lively also made a cameo in as Ladypool.

Both Deadpool & Wolverine and It Ends With Us are currently in theaters, continuing to draw audiences and further cementing Lively and Reynolds’ status as one of Hollywood’s most successful and beloved couples.
