In the midst of a tumultuous evening at Fenway Park, the Yankees announced a significant acquisition: Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Marlins, in exchange for three prospects.
Chisholm who was voted as the National League’s starting second baseman for the 2022 All-Star Game, has predominantly played centre field over the past two seasons. This shift was to accommodate Miami’s All-Star second baseman Luis Arraez, who has since been traded to the Padres. Recently, Chisholm has begun to transition back to second base a few times a week, reducing his time in the outfield to manage his physical workload.

Yankees receive: OF/INF Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Marlins receive: C Agustin Ramirez (Yankees No. 20 prospect), INF Jared Serna (No. 19 prospect), INF Abrahan Ramirez
Following New York’s 11-8, 10-inning victory on Saturday, the team expressed enthusiasm for their newest addition.
Analyzing the Chisholm Trade from All Sides
“He’s a dynamic player” remarked a smiling Aaron Judge. “You can slot him at the top of the lineup or anywhere, really; he’s definitely going to deepen our lineup. He’s a weapon—whether in the outfield or any infield position. He’s got speed, power, and we’re all pretty excited to have him on board.”
“We’re thrilled to have a talent like his” added manager Aaron Boone. “We believe his skill set will thrive at Yankee Stadium. He’s got power, tremendous speed, and positional versatility. He plays with a lot of energy and charisma.”
Entering 2024, Chisholm faced two primary questions: his ability to stay healthy and his performance against left-handed pitching. He has proven himself in both areas. The left-handed-hitting Chisholm, who has already played more games this season (101) than last, has posted a better batting average (.254 vs. .246) and on-base percentage (.324 vs. .323) against left-handers.
While his home run rate has dipped, Chisholm still boasts double-digit home runs (13) and stolen bases (22) for the fourth consecutive season. Notably, he has improved his whiff rate from 35.7% to 28.6%, even as he faces fewer pitches to hit. Additionally, his elite baserunning abilities have been highlighted by Baseball Savant.
Despite New York’s excitement about their new star, the Marlins expressed regret over losing a player who had quickly become a beloved figure within the organization.

“Jazz was obviously significant to the fan base and the organization” said Marlins manager Skip Shumaker. “He was on the cover of ‘[MLB] The Show,’ and every kid, including mine, wanted to watch Jazz play. It’s always tough to lose a dynamic player like him.”
The 26-year-old Chisholm is no stranger to trade deadlines, having been part of a 2019 deal that sent him from Arizona to Miami for right-hander Zac Gallen. Chisholm, earning $2.63 million in 2024, has two more years of arbitration eligibility before potentially becoming a free agent.

Among the prospects headed to Miami is catcher Agustin Ramirez, now ranked as the Marlins’ No. 4 prospect according to MLB Pipeline. Ramirez, who turns 23 in September, has posted a .269/.358/.505 slash line with 20 homers and 18 stolen bases this season, mostly at Double-A Somerset. After a slow start following his promotion to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre, Ramirez has been on a hot streak, batting .324 and hitting safely in his last eight games, significantly raising his stock.
The Yankees also sent High-A infielder Jared Serna, now the Marlins’ No. 8 prospect, and Rookie-level infielder Abrahan Ramirez to Miami.
When asked about trade rumors on Thursday, Chisholm diplomatically declined to speculate on leaving Miami, stating, “Baseball is baseball. I love playing baseball, so I’m going to go out there and enjoy the game every day.”
Regarding Chisholm’s arrival with the Yankees, Boone was non-committal, saying, “We’ll see,” but the team is eager to integrate him into the roster as soon as possible.
“I think everyone will love him once he gets here,” commented Marcus Stroman.
